In 2010, just after the soccer world cup fever left SA, I started an outreach program in a township called Mamelodi in Pretoria. It was always a dream of mine to start something that would bring the joy of dance to those that could not afford it. Part of that dream was to build something that could eventually become the community’s ‘own thing’. I made a pact with myself to just pitch up for them every week, we didn’t need much more than space to dance. With help here and there from individuals and organisations, I was able to let these students train weekly, watch performances, participate in competitions and performances, and attend workshops. After relocating to Struisbaai earlier this year, it all came together. After teaching in Mamelodi myself for 13 years, I was able to leave (with many tears) the program to two dancers that were trained through the program. I am so incredibly proud of Maud and Thabiso. In 5 short months they have grown the program, implemented it into 3 pre-schools, and they are in high demand to choreograph for local schools and events. They are earning their living through dance. It takes 2 very special individuals to achieve the advanced level of dance they did with classes only once a week. They practiced and trained on their own, kept themselves motivated, were dedicated beyond their means, and never gave up. At the end of this year, they will be producing their very first performance with their students to showcase their achievements to their community. Best of luck to Maud and Thabiso. I am hoping to start something like this our community too. Watch this space and please feel free to contact me if know someone who loves dance but does not have the means. - Laura (Southern Pointe School of Dance)
Maud and Thabiso both received Honours for their DanceCor Advanced 2 examinations in 2022
